I've been enthusiastic about Scripture memorization since my early teens, but lately I've become increasingly aware or the importance of being armed with the Sword of the Spirit - the Word of God - in my daily battle "against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12).
I often get so caught up in the struggles and responsibilities of the day, that I forget that God has admonished us not to walk in the flesh, but in the spirit. Although we walk in the flesh and in a material world, we are at war against a very evil spiritual world, and it is up to us to take authority over the situation and pick up our spiritual weapons of warfare, for they are "mighty in God" (2 Corinthians 10:3-6).
I've come to the realization that I'm not a very effective wielder of my spiritual Sword (the Word of God) if I don't KNOW it. Hence, my endeavors in memorizing Scriptures. Over the years, I've memorized quite a large selection of verses for various occasions and circumstances. However, now I'm embarking on an even more challenging journey - that of memorizing an entire Book. I've selected the Book of James, since the message contained therein has always been particularly inspiring to me.
I'm a very visual person and find it easier to memorize things if I can visualize it - with lots of color and pictures to help out. So, my first step in tackling the first chapter of James, was to create a colorful Scripture Map of the entire chapter. I printed it, placed the 2 pages in sheet protectors, and taped them to the cabinet doors in my kitchen.
I invite you to download and print these pages here and join me in the challenging journey of Scripture memorization. Let me know how you're doing, and feel free to share some tips and ideas to help anyone to memorize the wonderful Word of God!
